With the Atlantic Ocean right on our doorstep, we fully understand the beauty and power of nature and recognise our responsibility to use resources wisely. By maintaining our focus on shaping opportunities in aviation, property and tourism, we commit to doing so with minimum environmental impact.
To do this, we have identified five core elements which will form the basis for our sustainability drive for generations to come.

Developing a culture of sustainability

Ensuring that environmental awareness amongst our employees, partners and visitors is at its highest level possible is a priority for us group-wide. It’s imperative that key environmental principles and targets are weaved into our everyday operations.

Initiatives and results

  • Extensive paper recycling in our offices.

  • Encouraging staff to participate in National Spring Clean Week.

  • Shannon Heritage was awarded the €coMerit environmental certificate in 2019 for the initiatives implemented across all sites.

Driving our transition to low carbon airport campus

Fostering and enabling partnerships is key to genuine sustainability and that’s why we have teamed up with ESB Innovation to support our transition to a low carbon airport. A series of key initiatives are designed to deliver significant reduction in energy consumption throughout our airport campus.

Initiatives and results

  • Water delivered to the airport campus is now sourced from a lake just 14 Km away and is filtered through a “slow-sand filtration system” managed on-site.
  • Our roof water recovery system recovers rainwater from the roof can be used in toilets throughout the terminal building.

Designing new infrastructure with efficiency in mind

Embracing innovation is part of who we are. For new infrastructure, we focus on designing and developing in an environmentally-sustainable manner, deploying innovation with precision and purpose.

Initiatives and results

  • Our new office blocks have been awarded LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design – a prestigious green building rating system) Gold status accreditation. This awards careful management of waste streams, including reduce, re-use, and recycle practices.

  • All new property developments will be compliant with EU Energy Performance of Buildings Directive 2010/31/EU, Nearly Zero Energy Buildings (NZEB).

Reducing our carbon footprint in existing infrastructure

When it comes to refurbishing and replacing existing infrastructure, we ensure all work where possible is completed in line with our sustainability goals.

Initiatives and results

  • Our lighting upgrade programme involves the installation of energy efficient LED lights within the lighting system right across our group.

  • At our Shannon Free Zone Business Park, the upgrade works to public lighting system date has resulted in a 26% reduction in the energy usage required for our public lighting in SFZ since 2016.

  • We have also replaced the internal lighting systems with energy efficient LED lighting at our various properties and sites.

Supporting the roll-out of Low Carbon Transport Systems

Sustainable transport is destined to play a major role in the economy and community of tomorrow and beyond. We’re working diligently towards achieving our ‘nearly zero carbon journeys to work’ goals and continue to promote the importance of transitioning to electric vehicles throughout our family of businesses.

Initiatives and results

  • Our new office block development has the largest number of EV Charging points on private land in Ireland.

  • We are also in the process of electrifying parking spaces provided within the Shannon Free Zone.
